We head off to Departure Bay ferry port in our little Mazda 2 named Wes. Setting sail for Nanaimo. The weather forecast was looking ropey to say the least but we were pleasantly surprised during our crossing. Being the subtle and quiet fellows that we are we happen to attract the attention of a very sweet Aussie couple who mistake us for fellow Aussies. Not the first time this has happened, we will definitely fit right back in when we arrive down under in October!
The crossing goes smoothly and we join Wes again for the remainder of our journey through to Tofino. We grab the essentials of meat and wine on our way and enjoy the beauty of Vancouver Island. We enter the Pacific Rim national park and then shortly arrive in Tofino. A small village renowned for whale watching. We check in to our hostel aptly names the 'whalers on the point' and make ourselves at home by exploring the town and the stunning surroundings. We make an executive decision to assess our whale watching options the next morning. Waking up full of motivation we are greeted by the most ..... Fog. Yup so much fog visibility was hugely limited. So much for an idyllic whale watching boat trip. We make a plan B and drive back down the coast full of optimism. Stopping at a rainforest walk en route. The path directs us to a beach where we attempt to find the shore line through (yep you guessed it!! ) thick fog. Unfortunately I am not exaggerating and it was the theme for the rest of the afternoon. We head to a beachside coffee shop and treat ourselves to a nice cup of tea! Just like beach holidays at home aye!? How very British!
We persevere and try one last beach. At this stage we admit defeat and head back to our hostel. Miracles happened after we freshened up. The sky cleared so we headed out for a sunset drink to make the most of our evening.
The morning of our departure was brighter than the previous one so we enjoyed brekkie with a view before we began our journey back to Nanaimo and ultimately back to Vancouver.
Being two young ladies who like to test ourselves we had ourselves booked onto the red eye flight to Toronto. So next stop Vancouver airport and onto the next city on our whistle stop tour of Canada.
