The institution was founded in 1551. It was co-patronage of the archbishop and King Philip II , which aimed to educate young people to be good mothers. They came from humble families (at the proposal of the archbishop) and others from noble families from all over Europe (at the proposal of the king) It operated under its original statute until 1990, when the college became a university residence.
