A teacher at the Skogar School initiated the project to begin planitng in 1950. Lack of shelter initally made it hard for the trees to grow, but they survived. The forest has diverse types of trees, some of which are rare in Iceland.. Timber comes from thinning of Sitka Spruce planted in 1954 and has been used to build bridges and steps in the forest
