	The Udmurt are a Finno-Ugric people related to the Mari to the west and the Komi farther north. Settled by the Udmurt, the area came under the control of the khanate of Kazan in the 14th and 15th centuries and passed into Russian control in 1552 during the reign of Ivan IV the Terrible
