Hey guys!
Soo havent updated you on what I did in Nanjing or Suzhou so will do so now. Was in both for 2 nights and was nice to get out of really rammed cities- having said that, it seems like there isnt a city that isnt rammed with people!
Nanjing is famous for the massacre of Nanjing or also known as the rape of Nanking. As you can probably guess it was a massacre by the Japanese in 1937, where in a 6 week period around 300,00 people were murdered and most of the women raped. We started the day with a cheary visit to the museum all about the goings on and so was basically a depressing morning. Was pretty ironic though that during the massacre foreign residence set up a 'safey zone' that was headed by a member of the Nazi party....interesting.
After the museum I wondered around some more markets and tried my hardest not to buy things- its all so bloody cheap I cant help myself! Dont expect gifts though, im not that nice!
Suzhou was another big city but it didnt feel as bad as we spent loads of the day wondering around the beautiful backstreets next to the canal. The city is really typical china and I spent rather a lot of the day watching people....while they probably watched me. I will be gracing many a chinese family album with the amount of photos I need to pose for.
The following day we were planning on doing a bike ride around the city but it was raining really heavily so I barely wanted to get out of bed! I did though and it turned out to be a great day despite the rain. The whole tour group, which consists of me, a really funny German called Ansgard, an Aussy couple called Willy and Sunni, an older Aussy called Paul, the Aussy tour leader Suse, a girl same age as me, Menaha from Watford (!) and an older British lady called Elaine. We all had loads of fun not doing much but wondering the streets and eating various odd things from street stalls. We also visited a silk factory where you could see the machines that pull the little silk worms thread apart- suprisingly interesting.
Now here in Hangzhou where it is again chucking it down and the main sight to see here is a lake....great. Seen what I can of it in the rain and have retreated back to the hostel. Might invest in a hot chocolate and a shower like an old lady.
Only one night here, tomorrow we're off to Shanghai. bye bye xx
