The Quire Screen Dates to the 15th century. It is one of the most striking features inside the building. the entrance to the Quire appearing to be guarded by the 15 Kings of England from William I to Henry VI. The screen appears to be symmetrical, however closer inspection will reveal that there are 7 Kings to the left of the Archway and 8 Kings to the right. The statue with the most interesting history is that of Henry VI. The original figure of Henry VI was removed in 1469 as it was thought that improper reverence was being shown to his statue. It was replaced in 1516 but subsequently removed and destroyed during the Reformation. A wooden statue of James I was later added as a replacement. This remained until 1810 when a newly carved statue of Henry VI was returned in its place. The statue of King James can now be found in Ripon Cathedral.
