These are Kunai, and contrary to popular belief, Kuni were originally used as Digging impliments, NOT for throwing or stabbing, now this isn't to say that when cornered and the ninja only has a kunai on his he won't use it as a weapon. The kunai was used to dig small holes in walls so that the ninja could have an eye hole or maybe a place to put a blown dart pipe.
