Hyde Park, London, City of Westminster, Greater London, England, UK
On a whim and in London..
London's Oxford Street, formally Tyburn Road is perhaps most famously known as being one of a set of three green properties on a Monopoly board or home to the flagship store, Selfridges & Co. Founded by Harry Gordon Selfridge and opened on March 15th 1909. A high-end department store chain and the second largest shop in the United Kingdom. (after Harrods)
These days, this iconic London location is best recognized between mid to late November and right up until January 6th when it is ablaze with thousands of festive lights.
The 'tradition' of the Christmas Lights commenced in 1959, some five years after its neighboring, Regent Street began. Each year, a celebrity is chosen to turn the lights on. Such names as Bob Geldof, Robbie Williams, Cliff Richard and Lenny Henry have all partaken in this annual tradition.
Oxford Street itself is located two and a half kilometers from Marble Arch at the North East Corner of Hyde Park.
This year, November 23rd, 2012 to January 6th, 2013 saw the return of festive family favourite, Winter Wonderland to London's Hyde Park. Home to the UK's largest outdoor Ice Rink, Giant Observation Wheel, Angels Christmas Market, Santa Land, Yuletide Market, Zippos Circus, Bavarian Village with its delectable Mulled Wine and Bratwurst and all new, Magical Ice Kingdom - home to over 500 ice and snow sculptures.
