Hello all!!
Arrived in Krabi on the weekend after a long day travelling from the other side of thailand. Stayed in a nice but expensive guest house in the main town and headed on on a boat to Railay beach early the next morning. We took a long tail 'local' taxi boat over to Railay. the journey took 45 mins and i was hanging on for dear life...I hate these things as your usually sat near enough on the water and the drivers are usually hell bent on going fast and are rather reckless. When we were in Laos on one of them our long tail crashed into another moored boat...hence my fear of these things!!
Railay had been seriously bigged up by alot of people we knew as well as the guide books. I have to say i was quite disappointed with it. We landed on the less attractive side as that where our hotel was (cheaper you see) and later went wondering to the other side...which was lovely but due to monsoon and heavy tides there was so much washed up on the beach that it was spoiled a bit. one mega plus point is unlike alot of the island beaches we have been to this one the sea gets deep quite quick so you can go swimming and not just paddling!!
We had a few issues with our hotel as we had paid up for three nights throught the agent on the main land and after 2hours we realised we only wanted to stay two nights. A long 'war' of communication insued between us, the hotel staff, manager and the agent. We eventually bargained a refund which was paid from the hotel managers on pocket!! The scams that go on here are so annoying! The agent had over charged us between 50 and 100 baht for our rooms....now 65 baht is a quid but when your on a budget that is alot . Also just to add injury to insult there were rats here...and you all know how much i hate rats!! Shane woke up to one eating food in his bag and the couple in my room before me switched as there was rats in the bathroom (mmm dejevu) so i used the public hotel toilet and Nic and Bens shower!!! One last bad note about our hotel...im on a roll now...in Asia there sewage systems aren't that all advanced so you have to put toilet paper in a bin by the side...if people (as they do) put it down the loo they get blocked quickly. Most places have large ponds of sewage that you can smell a mile off...anyway i had a sneaky suspision that our hotels 'poo pit' was underneath the raised restuarant decking!!!! The smell was gross!!!!!!! Ooo why did we stay here.....we couldn't move because of the whole refund war that was going on plus to be honest you don't spend that much time at the hotel anyways!
On a positive note we were blessed with quite good weather so the tan got a top up..plus me and Nic had such a laugh messing around in the water. Also we had a ice night out, meeting up with a guy we had met in Laos, his new friends and a Swiss guy who was gorgeous
We left for Koh Phi Phi island on another longtail...luckily we changed to a very nice boat that met us in the bay. Had a 2hour boat journey where i was just engrossed in my book as the weather was bad so no point of sitting on deck. Phi Phi is really touristy with package holiday makers..same as Samui. It was also very badly hit by the tsunami. Following directions form the swiss guy to a place he stayed on the island we stumbled across a really nice, clean, cheap guesthouse that i'd recommend to anyone! It's funny as its run/owned by a german lesbian who has lived on the island for 9 years....everything but the latter is speculated tee hee!! Our first day in Phi Phi it rained alot and only cleared up later...I did my own thing which was nice. That evening we went out and everyone apart from me and Nic got drinking buckets of booze...these are all over asia and i have sampled many but didn't fancy drinking. Just had fun laughing at them getting more drunk and dancing like fools.
I was clear headed the next day as we had an all day crusie around the islands and to the famous 'Beach' from the film. The weather was considerably nicer which was a plus. As we came to the 'beach' though a storm came over and the waces picked up so our snorkelling time was shortened! Also Beka was VERY sea sick and quite a few people, including her were 'feeding the fishes' as you say . We cruised around and stopped for more snorkelling at shark bay. My snorkel from the boat company was rubbish as it leaked on the nose so i had to hold my nose and couldn't swim so great. I had bought my own snorkel on the other islands and wish i had that with me! Unfortunately no one saw any sharks! We had a nice lunch and all the sicky people got a boat back to the main land. The weather became amazing and we went to the most stunning beach iv seen so far on Bamboo Island, then to Monkey island where there are loads of monkeys living on the beach...you can feed them but they were a bit wild and unpredictable so i thought with my luck streak i best not!!! The baby ones were cute but would turn easily and one bloke was chased by 3 of them!! Luckily i had started getting my fins back on at this point so was in the safety of the water....and he wasn't hurt as they didn't catch up with him. We stayed on the boat to watch sunset and it was too over cast to get a good one so we headed home. The day was really good and i spoke to so many nice people..the only downer was that because we had to swim from the boat to the beaches i didn't get any good pics...but i've got memories!!
That night we went for dinner and one of the guys we met on the boat joined us...a very gorgeous 6ft 3 american . We went to a all you can eat japanese/thai/seafood bbq joint...oh my...how many prawns did i eat!! And all for under 4 pounds!!! We then went on a bit of a bucket session again...with only me and the boys staying out. we went to the 'Reggae Bar' where they have live Thai boxing and westerners can par take and the winner wins a bucket. It was so funny as girls were doing it but laughing all the way and some blokes got really into it...a recipe for disaster as everyone is drunk!!! Health and safety again!!!!!
Today we had big plans to go to the lovely 'Long Beach' and walk to the view point where you can really see the affects of the tsunami. Unfortunately the monsoon is reeeeaaaallllly upon us and it has rained heavily for over 3 hours....this rain comes form all angles and just being in it 20 seconds you are soaked....hence the long blog entry for a change. Later another one of our friends form China is joining us so that should be fun....rain or no rain!!
Tomorrow i head back to mainland Krabi to get a bus to Malaysia...only 11 days to Oz and I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!!! Love to you all...please email so i can read your news!!! xxxxxxxxx
