30 July 2009 Finland, Aavasaksa?
I have no idea what the place is called where I am at but it's nearing the Finish coastline where I'll be taking the highway down the Swedish coastline (which is said to be the fastest way down). I've chosen Aavasaksa cuz it's a cool name and need to mark it somewhere on the map. When I felt I was getting too tired to drive any further I chose the first spot to camp I could find. Here I am, at the edge of a lake again, where a few old fogies are fishing in the sun. Not bad.
Who would have thought that I would spend more than a quick drive through in Finland. Have been driving for 8 hours with two breaks and a power nap in between; wanted to cover a big distance to start off with. It's careful and attentive driving and extremely tiresome because the scenery in these parts is monotonously the same all the way. Got out of the car and felt dizzy. Had a shower and while enjoying a nightcap I'm writing this little note.
I have seen more reindeer cross the road here than anywhere else. Think today I saw 20 in total, most of them alone or in pairs. They have a very silly walk, like they're awfully drunk and can't decide whether 'home' is to the left or right. They sort of throw their feet into the air while walking. No other way to describe it. It's not uncommon for them to walk towards you, or more correctly: straight at you as if they are challenging you to a duel. You really do not want to hit one of them, if nor for the damage surely for hurting something so beautiful. Well, I feel already like I'm about to nod off and it's only 19.00 but I guess I have had quit an intense day. In this way I'll be home in a week, but that is definitely not wise. Nightie night.
Btw ankle is getting worse. Oh dear. Lucky it's the gear and not the accelerator foot.
23:15 and I am wide awake. Fell asleep as soon as my head touched the pillow but have been woken by little fishing boats returning from a lake further down and can't seem to get back to sleep. Apparently the spot I chose to camp for the night, is their parking area. They don't seem to be sensitive that 'someone is trying to sleep here!' as they force their boat engines to the max right in front of me. Opened my door to cast an angry look at them (as if that would help). Well, I'm not going to get grumpy now, I figured I might as well do some writing and reading. With no electricity I'll make the place all nice and cosy with candles. Hope I don't set the place on fire!
I'm sad a few plans have gone down the drain because of my wish to fast-track home.
I was supposed to meet Alev in Oslo, Sabien in Copenhagen, Mia somewhere in Sweden and a few people were still indecisive. Next time folks! But both my friends and Scandinavia will be there for some time to come so I'm sure there will be some scheming of wicked travel plans in the future.
Now. Where are those Vikings. Do they have them in Finland too?
