From San Jose it was northwards to the mountain town of Monteverde. This town became famous with tourists as the best place to see the famous quetzal! It is a really beautiful place, but has become such a tourist hotspot that it is lacking a little authenticity and things are really expensive. US$45 for a hike, US$25 for a night walk, US$12 for the butterfly park, US$10 for the frog park, US$20 for a train ride through the jungle, US$50 to go canyonning - you get the idea! Even walking through the paths on your own is made pretty difficult as everything is guided and charged in dollars. It is a lovely setting though, and we did a hike to a view point (on our own!) and we decided to dish out some bucks and go zip lining - wow, that was cool!
