So the decision was made, we were going to venture slightly further north. Off in search of the Peruvian Spectacled Bears which Paddington Bear was based on.
The wasn't a lot to do in city of Chiclayo, other than a morning by the pool, amazing ceviche lunch and a trip round the "witches market" where you could buy all manner of dried up dead animals, bird beaks, herbs and offered hallucinogenic concoctions like San Pedro or ayahuasca on every corner (we didn't partake!)
The Chaparri reserve looks after Andean bears that have been rescued, often having been bought as pets then abandoned. The work that they do releasing some of the bears where possible back into the wild and providing a protected no poaching area is great. We got to see a couple of bears up close in a semi-wild enclosure, their individual facial markings or "spectacles" giving them real character.
The trip out to Chaparri reserve was overall a little bit if a disappointment, not being quite as "wild" as we had hoped and it was now time to start hot footing it back south to Chile!
