Began this day with Jesus .... went to a wonderful service at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Casper, Wyoming. The service was a contemporary service with an excellent band - played lots of songs that we had never heard before and wished that we had the music to bring home. It was a 9:00am service giving us a good amount of time to then drive the 5 hours to Custer, South Dakota.
After church we met and chatted to some of the members who gave us some hints on the way to travel and he suggested we go to Custer via Hot Springs. He told us that there was a Mammoth dig. We had no idea what that was, but we were pleasantly surprised! We thought we might just see a skeleton or 2, but we weren't prepared for an actual excavation dig that even now is still in progress. Apparently there are 50 mammoths buried somewhere in this area. Most are in partial form but some have been miraculously preserved. The mammoths were around about 26,000 years ago (at the end of the last ice age) and fell into this sink hole which was then covered by the mud.
There are full heads and bones galore. Spent quite a while looking around this museum and the dig before setting back into the RV and heading to Custer. The weather wasn't too bad so we lit a campfire toasted mashmellows and had s'mores (melted chocolate, toasted marshmellows between two sweet biscuits) - YUM!!!! It is meant to be horrid weather these next few days so I hope we get to see what we want to!!
In Christ, Anne
