Well - we survived the BEAST - somehow! I dont know how we did it but 50 hour wasnt actually as bad as i thought! I took so many pictures during the journey there is enough for a whole album - the views etc were ace. We went through loads of national parks then up through the Rockie mountains and went through loads of really deep snow at the glacier parks then sunshine again. Madness! They had an observation carriage on the train which was like a big green house where you could see everything. And also we had a proper meal on the train (which we had to wait about 3 hours for) and we had MASH POTATO!! Ooh yeah! The rest of the time i just slept, played my DS, read or listened to music. And we all played lots of cards. It really wasnt that bad. I'll put pics up of the views etc soon.
We got to Vancouver eventually - we were so happy to arrive! Vancouver is nothing like i imagined! Its so weird - but nice. Its like going back in time about 10-20 years. I imagined it to be really modern and clean but its really old fashioned and even a little tacky in places. The buildings are all very 80's and a car drove past the other day playing backstreet boys then a man walked past in a denim shirt - so god knows what year we are in.. early 90s i think. When we got the BEAST we went through 2 different time zones (we went back an hour twice but i think somehow we got zoomed back to 1991!)
Vancouver is really nice though - we have been down to stanley park which is massive - nice harbour and they have random totem poles and we found a hill which we sat on then me and Carol had a few goes at rolling down it - was loads of fun. We also went to Granville Island which is near where we are staying - lots of nice shops and seafood places and people playing panpipes (playing christmas songs which was weird - then again we are in the 90's - anything goes!)
Today we went whale watching which was ACE! we travelled nearly 300 kilometres on a little boat and got absolutely soaked! Then we went to some little islands and saw about 10 different killer whales - they were ace - again i'll put pics on here soon. It was so nice to see them in the wild and the sea was so calm. The boat cut its engines and we all sat and waited and it was so quiet (i felt like i was in Jurassic Park and all of a sudden the boat would start shaking as a dinosaur approached from the distance). So yeah - that was definately a highlight of the trip so far.
We have to be up at 4am tomorrow as we are getting a 28 hour trip to San Francisco to meet Trudy etc - i cant wait! Me and Liz have just had a pitcher of beaver beer in the hostel bar so sorry if im waffling on a bit!
I'll put pics on here as soon as i can.
