After our initial disappointment with not getting our Indian visas we diverted to start our travels in Bangkok, capital of Thailand. India can wait for us to visit another time!
Steve (Matt's brother) kindly dropped us off at Heathrow, where we both discovered quite quickly that we may have packed too much! Flight was at 22.30 so we managed to sleep most of the way. (Matt is a T-shirt and jumper down due to spilling red wine whilst sleeping! Standard Matt).
We arrived at Bangkok airport about 3 in the afternoon and it must have been about 40 degrees, found a pink taxi and gave him the address of our Guesthouse.
We stayed 3 nights in the Bhiman Inn, about a 5 minute walk from Khao San Road. Considering what we paid we were surprised to find they had a roof top pool overlooking the river, our new best friend in the almost unbearable heat. Neither of us have been to Bangkok before so we were very surprised that it wasn't as commercial as we were both expecting. Everyone hears the seedy rumours about Bangkok but in reality that's a very tiny percentage of what this wonderful city has to offer.
Recommended by our friend Rachel Piper we went to Pat Pong night market which was an experience in itself, constantly asked, "ÿou buy something?" which we would soon get used to everywhere. We met some really interesting people here who gave us some good tips for our future travels. Served beer all night in a small bar run by an old Thai lady who kept her teeth in a jar on the side! Super cheap and a good base to people watch. There's always so much to see in this City, sometimes it is overwhelming, always lots going on.
The rest of our time here was spent exploring Bangkok's tourist attractions like the Palace and numerous shrines. Our time in the evening was mainly spent in and around the infamous Khao San Road area, most days and nights we bought food from the street sellers here, a local dish of noodles and the like is about 40p each and the people are so happy to have your business, one guy even went to buy us a beer from a supermarket as he didn't sell it (and only charged us what he had paid)!
It rained on our last day, we both hate rain but have never been so happy to sit outside for some slight relief from the heat. After 3 nights here we are looking forward to getting to Koh Chang to chill away from the hussle and bustle. Booked our tickets for 8GBP each which includes bus and boat to Koh Chang and we leave at 7 am in the morning!
