In the airplane from Fiji to Hawaii
I figured out that I booked my hostel in the wrong way. Instead of going from the 31st of March to the 1st of April, we went back in time one day and thus I had an extra long easter. In the airplane I met Dan, he would sleep in the same hostel as me and thus we decided to go the hostel together. Dan is originally from Italy and has lived in Germany for the past 10 years. We were totally on the same level and thus we traveled Hawaii together for the 10 days I had there. It was funny that some people thought that we were best friends since we were young.
We spent our first three nights in Waikiki. Waikiki is the main tourist area and is filled with beaches, Japanse tourists, beautiful girls, beachvolley fields and people enjoying their BBQ and drinks. It was perfect for relaxation but not really what we expected from Hawaii, that's why we decided to go to the north shore of Oahu.
We left our backpacks in the hostel in Waikiki and packed a small bag, just to survive 2 or 3 nights at the north shore. Dan met a guy from Estonia, Joosep, in the hostel who hired a car and offered us a ride to the north shore. Unfortunately we couldn't find him the next morning and thus we had to leave even more stuff in Waikiki, because we would take the bus to the north shore and stop at Pearl Harbor and the Dole plantation on the way. We got in the bus for 2.50 dollars only and drove to Pearl Harbour, which was very interesting to see. The bus tickets are valid for 2 hours and we found 2 new tickets on the ground. So, there we go, still paid only 2.50 and continuing to the Dole Plantation. The Dole pineapples are harvested at this central place of O'ahu. Everything you could buy there had something to do with pineapples, for example, pineapple icecream, pineapple hotdog and pineapple chocolate. After trying some pineapple products we rushed to the bus to get in again for free. We arrived at the North shore and we had to change busses. The beach there was called Haleiwa beach and was truly beautiful. Just around the corner you could find Buena Point, that beach would become our main surfspot and is filled with turtles! We were still not at our hostel though, which was more to the east. The bus could take a very long time, so we decided to hitchhike. I never did hitchhiking before, but actually that is the real backpacker style of traveling. I didn't know whether it would work, but after 5 minutes someone already invited us in his pick-up truck. We jumped in the back and made it to the next beach. We made some photos and hitchhiked further again. Now a guy who works for the military picked us up and told us where to go on the North shore. We said that we wanted to go to our hostel, but he didn't care, he wanted to bring us to the world-famous surfbreak, The Pipeline.
Unfortunately, it wasn't pipelining that day though. Now we had to head back to the hostel. We hitchhiked back with a hot surfchick, who is able to ride the pipeline, that's really impressive! So we traveled to the North shore with multiple stops, all for 2.50 dollars. Good deal! When we got into our room, we reunited with our lost Estonian guy, Joosep. We ended the night like we would end ever night at the North shore, with a bonfire on the beach. The USA is not as good as everyone believes in Europe, there are so many people living under the minimum living standard, it is unbelievable. Our bonfire was directed by Chad every night, he lives, eats and sleeps on the beach and he is only 22. Very cool guy and so we hung out at his bonfire every night with all the people from the hostel. Clear stars in the sky, live guitar playing, nice people and drinks. What do you want more?
Surfing of course! So that's what we did during the day. Watch whales in the ocean, surf with turtles, watch the beautiful scenery and when the sun falls, watch the prosurfers at the pipeline. Life is really perfect at the north shore of O'ahu. Except for the first day we were very lucky at the pipeline, the surfing season was actually over, but we were exactly there when there was a giant swell, so the next days we got pleased with surfers daring to challenge the massive pipeline waves. It was amazing to watch mother nature at it's best.
I surfed a lot with Michael from Germany, great guy and a good surfer. Hope to see you once on a wakeboard in Rotterdam mate. I met so many nice people at this hostel that there are too many names to mention. I would like to thank you all for the amazing time on the North Shore!
Dan and Joosep left one day earlier than me to Waikiki and of course we would meet up again there. It was nice to have some fresh t-shirts again. We reunited with Christina and Melanie, whom we met at Waikiki already, at the evening. We went for a dinner and a dance that night. Almost everyone was leaving the next day, so it was our goodbye party. Hawaii was truly amazing and definitely a place that I want to visit again. Hope to see you guys again! Dan, bro, reserve my table for Oktoberfest already please.
