The caves were breathtaking. We first went to the Ajanta Caves, which dates back from around the 2nd century BC to the 6th century AD. There are 30 caves that line the steep face of a horseshoe-shaped rock gorge bordering the Waghore River flowing below. Each cave filled with carved sculptures and paintings which were created from local minerals. Most of the ceilings were decorated in a floral pattern. Words can't measure up to the scene. So much dedication and time went into each cave, and it most definitely shows.
The Ellora Caves were also fascinating. These caves were chipped out over five centuries by generations of Buddhist, Hindu and Jain monks. We arrived a hour before closing time but we were able to see one of each. It was kind of ironic, here we stand in front of so much history, and culture and still people are trying to take pictures of the Americans. Where are your priorities?! lol It was just crazy to think that they traveled all this way, and oh hey, don't mind the elaborate courtyard your standing in front of with lion and elephant sculptures, you better take a picture of that white person! WHAT! I can't even explain on here, it was just the silliest thing I have ever seen. Who does that? I know that I should be more sensitive of the situation, but after a while it gets old.
Anyways, enough ranting. The Ellora Caves had monkeys everywhere! One of the interns, Kourtney, said it reminded her of Jumanjii (the movie) and that nailed it. The monkeys were on people's motorcycles, taking food from people's hands! There were baby monkeys which were pretty cute, but I wouldn't put it past them to look all innocent and then all of a sudden still your wallet. So I kept my distance. Luckily, I didn't see any monkeys in the caves so I could sit back and enjoy the time.
I'll post pictures up so you know what I'm talking about later today! Hope you all have a great day! :) I have some catching up to do so there will be more blog enteries to come!
