Marie's Travels
Hi AllI thought it had been a little while since I had been in touch so time for another update!!!I think I left you last time in Laos, we spent 2 weeks there and had a great time, we started off in the north, travelling all the way down to the South before crossing into Cambodia. Laos was a great place, very laid back and you could never be in a rush to do anything. We had a great day Kayaking down the Mekong River, we kayaked down a few different rapids but the rest of the time it was very peaceful with no one else in sight! Due to the rain, we had our lunch (a bbq cooked for us by our guide) in a tiny cave to keep dry which was great fun and delicious!!! We crossed into Cambodia on the 1st October and stayed in Siem Reap, we visited Angkor Wat for a couple of days which was amazing and also visited a mans house where he has set up his own little unofficial landmine museum, there are lots of people, mainly children living there who have been effected by landmines in Cambodia, either injured themselves or have lost their parents to them, there was lots of information on the statistics and the impact it has on Cambodia, it was a very sad but interesting day, makes you realise how lucky we all are!!! After Siem Reap we headed to Phnom Phen the capital, this place was a little crazy but had lots of attitude. We stepped off the bus to be hounded by tuk tuk drivers and people trying to scam us, the bus driver had to hold everyone back and let us get off the bus, we all felt a little like celebrites! In Phnom Phen we visited the royal palace and some markets where we stocked up on cheap dvd's. Our last day there we visited the S21 prison which had been a torture prison from the Khymer Rouge days in Cambodia, it told some shocking stories and makes you realise how tough the country has had it in the past, in the afternoon we went to the killing fields, a mass burial ground 11km out of the city, it was a very emotional but educational visit. We then headed to the southern coast of Cambodia where we stayed in a small seaside/fishing village called Kep, we stayed in some lovely little bungalows overlooking the sea, two minutes walk from our bungalow we had a line of crab shacks that sold some really great fresh seafood. It was nice to have a couple of days relaxing as we don't seem to have stopped over the last few weeks. We visited an island called Koh Tonsay, where we has a nice relaxing afternoon swimming in the sea, I managed to get burnt raw despite the cloud and thunderstorm that was looming overhead. The thunderstorm decided to wait until just before we boarded the boat to head back to the mainland so we arrived back at our bungalows soaking wet and not so smiley! The only way to get around Kep was to hire moto drivers, so everytime we had to go somewhere we had to hop on the back of some crazy Cambodian's motorbike and be whizzed around the town, great fun but a little scary with the roads over there and the fact they had never heard of helmets!!! We left Kep yesterday morning and took a long journey into Vietnam, we arrived in Hoh Chi Minh City (Saigon) last night and today we are having an explore, the city has a great buzz about it and I think I am really going to like it here. My sister is now coming for a weeks holiday to Vietnam on the 20th as she is in Asia on business, so I am very excited about that, we will more than likely have some nice lazy beach days as well as some adventures!!!The plan now is to head north through Vietnam and depending on time and money (as usual) we are going to try and get into China before heading home but seen as time seems to be flying and the bank balance is taking a hammering this might have to be put on the backburner, we will see! Anyway this has turned into a bit of an essay so I will leave it there for now and keep you updated!!! I have finally managed to get my Western Australia, Bali, Thailand and Laos photos on the website so please all have a look. www.offexploring.com/marieandstephontour.I hope everyone is well, email me and let me know what you have been up to.
