You may have been wondering where we had got to well we have been having too much of a good time to sit and write a blog but as most of you know we are home now and back to reality....But as we would like to share our experiences with you we thought we would summarise the last leg of our trip but we will keep it brief as we fear the tears may damage our laptop.....
So we left you in Australia and we followed our dreams of spending time in the sun sea and sand. We visited Rottnest Island and made friends with the quokkas but were saddened to see that even there they had a Dome cafe and a Subways - boo hoo hoo! We could go on to tell you about the crazy fruit loops we shared the hostel with however there were so many it would take far too long.....so instead we will tell you about the infamous Cottesloe beach Sunday sessions with 750ml bottles of premixed Jim Beam and cola as a pre-party tipple (the start of the sesh was a happy one!) Sitting on the balcony in the beautiful sun we found ourselves in view of an advertising shoot for Amstel beer with a very dubious-looking pouty lady (or was it a man??) popping bottle tops left right and centre. We found ourselves ducking these tops and laughing at the typical aussie men who came to oggle the scantily-clad model. It was rather funny though as the police turned up in response to a complaint that the crew were drinking alcohol on the street (illegal in Oz) so we watched them began pouring the beer in to large buckets and vats so as to show it wasn't being drunk...what a waste! With many a happy day behind us (and many a star-gazing night) we boarded the plane (not before Clare almost got arrested for talking on the phone through customs (thanks Rob!)) to Singapore. Safely arriving in the first leg of our asian adventures, we hopped in a taxi relieved to find English being spoken everywhere and arrived in the city centre and the door to Neal and Caroline's apartment (both who we had never met before) all would have been fine and we wouldn't have felt awkward except that it was Valentine's night and a time for couples privacy (whoopsy!) Making ourselves scarse we quickly showered and headed out to the streets of Singapore and a Mongolian BBQ restaurant where we stuffed ourselves silly (who needs men, we thought, when food tastes this good!)...So whilst in Singapore we watched the Chinese new year parade; wandered around Raffles, where we met people from our village (how random!); visited the tooth relic temple in China Town and strolled along the vibrant riverside area....Sadly we didn't make the zoo at midnight as we had hoped but we had other engagements which included meeting our tour group - what characters!
So after boarding a public bus in Singapore we found ourselves across the boarder and in to Melaka in Malaysia. A beautiful old town rich in culture and history not to mention brightly decorated tuk-tuks blasting hip-hop beats from their onboard stereos. We spent several days here so we won't bore you with every detail but some of the highlights were - a river cruise through the old and new town; line-dancing Malaysian style in China Town; cocktails and super-cheap shopping. Our next stop was the capital city Kualar Lumpur where we went up the Petronas Towers for spectacular views of the city and were chased by monkeys at the Batu caves (We loved it in here and highly recommend it to anyone who visits). . One night we bumped into an old travel chum, Karl, and celebrated with Bob Marley at the reggae reggae bar...With Clare's hangover in check (Amanda was fully hydrated having drunk water all night) we boarded another public bus this time to Cameron Highlands where we went strawberry picking; saw butterflies and other creepy-crawlys and drank lots of tea....It was a bit chillier here than what we were used to but it made a nice change for a few days at least before it was time to make our way back down through the lushious hillsides to the coast and to Georgetown in Penang. Sporting the hat and bracelet Amanda had been given from the indigeneous tribal villagers she had visited we toured the town.... We were welcomed in to a mosque where we watched prayer time (although this is usually for men only) and learned about Islam; we went to the buddist temple; up and down Penang Hill (5k high, in flip-flops, and with more monkeys along the route); and enjoyed numerous dinners at Red Garden....
We will leave it here as Clare has to go home for dinner (no chopsticks today!) and our mourning is disturbing the household so we will say Sayonara, Bula, Aloha, Kiaora, Sweet as and bye for now.... further updates soon!
