Greetings from Sucre!
This used to be the captial of Bolivia until La Paz took over a few years ago, however, Sucre still thinks it is. The rivalry makes Sydney/Melbourne, Edinburgh/Glasgow look tame! We were very glad to arrive here having been particularly underwhelmed by La Paz. It may have been too hyped up in advance, but apart from an excellent British Curry House and the fascinating San Pedro Prision (we tried to get in for a tour but that is no longer an option for travellers) which was still well worth seeing from the outside......right in the centre of town occupying a reasonably small block for a major prison.
The main event of the week was the bike ride down the famous ´World´s Most Dangerous Road´. The ride starts at 4700m and ends at approximately 1200m. The road was closed to traffic to traffic two years ago and when you ride it you can understand why! It is dirt rutted track which plunges 600m off the sideand is so narrow that vechicles would not have an opportunity to pass along most of it. Despite the traffic, the danger is still very real as we experienced when we were shown the memorial to the last cyclist who died there on the 9th May, 2009, a 22 year old English guy!!! However, it was an exhilarating and thrilling four hours ride (without any spills!) and the views were amazing. We have attached some photos and video´s taken by our guides during the ride. The postscript to add is that we had a personal tour, just the two of us.......which is why the video´s and photos are only of us!
It had been highly recommended to stay at Coroico where the ride finished, a beautiful village. You had to remind yourself that you were in Bolivia and not int the Austrian Alps (see views from our balcony). We had a very chilled out couple of days!
After a couple of days spent in Sucre (a beautiful Colonial city much less frenzied than Laz Paz) we are heading to Potosi and will take a tour of the infamous Silver mine.
Hope this finds you all well.
Love Mal and Nat
