When we got to Jakarta we had to swap terminals to go to the domestic terminal. We got the yellow free busy which was small and packed. We went to ANM for a burger whilst we waited to catch our flight. We then went and sat at our gate according to the board. Anyway I was pretty zoned out and was reading so wasn't paying to much attention but our flight seemed to be running late. Rich ran over a few mins past 4 and said we were at the wrong gate. We ran to the right gate but of course it was gone. SO SO SO Frustrating. A man took us back through to the check in terminal and into a room where the girl spoke little English. We then booked on another flight 3 hours later for £25. I was so grumpy about this but I knew it could be worse but I was hungover and tired and wanted to get to our destination. Anyway we stuck with the boarding pass and got to Yogakarta and our luggage was there thankfully.
We got a taxi to our hotel and it was down an alley off the main busy road. We got settled in and then went to find some food. We ended up at a roof top restaurant which was very nice, we had chicken satay and a curry dish.We booked a driver through our hotel to take us to the two main temples in Yogakarta: Borobudur and Prambanan the next day. We met him at 9am and we had a sweet man called Addi who took us around. We went to Borobudur first and this was stunning. We even picked up a lovely souvenir from a man who wouldn't leave us alone of the bell which the top lifted off to reveal a little buddha. Rich and I kept getting stopped for photos which was funny. Not used to white westerners. There was a school outing and all these kiddies were dressed up and there was one who was dressed as a dictator or something and he has a little soldier boy next to him. They were all really cute. We walked around each layer of the temples and looked at the designs. It was spectacular. After we covered all levels we headed to a museum on the way out. It wasn't particularly exciting. Addi then took us to get some lunch at a little road side cafe. We headed towards a volcano but the weather was really rubbish so there was no point in going any further. You could go in army trucks up there and get closer but it was rainy and cloudy. We then went to Prambanan which was lovely but not as good as the first. This consisted of several temples which looked very Cambodian style (like the Angkor Wat) We climbed into each one and there was a statue in each one in a dark room. Pretty scary. He took us to one last smaller one which was closed but they saw an opportunity to make some cash. There was a photo shoot going on which was amusing to watch. The guy was pretty short next to the woman. Afterwards Addi took us back and we washed up before we went for dinner. We ended up in a backpackers bar. We did almost try the street food but decided to go boring western. After dinner we had our first massage of the trip. It was good but also felt like we were getting beaten up! I guess that's the downside when you don't have a good massage every now and again.
The next day we went to check out the pool top and it was nice but not a sunbathing pool, more one to chill in. We then headed to go to Sultans Palace. We went to one and we were thinking it was pretty rubbish and then on the way out they said the other one - basically the real one was around the corner. We headed over and this one was much better, more established and had more items and cultural stuff in it. There were lots of school trips and a group wanted a picture with Richard. After we looked around we headed back to the hotel and got our stuff ready for our taxi to the airport. Next stop was Bali, Ubud! The airport was really small and it had a little cafe so we had some food but they still do smoking in restaurants which is pretty grim. Once we landed, we got a taxi which took about an hour to UBUD to Jalan Jalan which was near the centre. It was a very cute villa with a lovely looking pool. We headed for a little wander and had a nice dinner and I had these chicken, lamb and fish skewers.
The next day we chilled by the pool for a few hours and then headed off to Monkey Forest which was pretty cool. The monkey's were pretty cute but were very cheeky, one was pulling at Richard's short pockets. And one jumped out of his muddy pond up at me in an attempt to get the water bottle. We booked our white water rafting session and cookery class and went for a Mexican which was yummy. The next day we went white water rafting for 2 hours with a German couple on our boat and then for lunch. It was fairly tame the rapids and it was packed with other people. They made a stop at some wall which had pretty etchings on it. We also stopped at a riverside bar. Later on we got back and showered and headed for our cookery class. We were taken to their sister restaurant which was in a very scenic spot.. We had the main woman do most the explaining and another guy talk through the recipes. We cut all the garlic and onions and chillies, they cooked the meats and fish. We learnt about making the pastes for the food.We did chicken satay, Chicken in coconut, an aubergine dish, Tuna steak salads and a cassava dessert. Afterwards we all ate the food together and it was amazing! We got back about 7ish and chilled for a bit. We wanted to go for a massage but they were all shut. So we called it a night, ready for an early morning.
