Macklen's Euro Trip
Hi! I did my first bit of solo travelling to get to Athens, Greece! I left Paris in the afternoon yesterday and took a 7 hour relaxing train ride to Milan, Italy. Then I hopped on a night train to Bari, Italy (9.5 hours). I had a sleeping car reserved for this one, so I could try and get a little sleep - otherwise I think I would be a reck...I don't do too well when I'm tired. Brandon can attest to this...when I am tired...I just let everything go...I can barely lift my own feet to carry me to the bed! The sleeping car had three beds stacked on top of eachother like vertical sardines. There were two other Italian women in there...who spoke no English, and me no Italian. I took a motion sickness pill to ease my stomach nervousness and to help me sleep a bit - it worked! We arrived in Bari at 8:31am. I stored my luggage in the station for the day so I could explore the city. This is where my grandfather, 'Shorty Mayse', was stationed during WWII so I thought it was really special to have the opportunity to set foot where he once lived, walked, and served his country. I make a trip back to Bari for about half a day so I'm going to try and find a WWII memorial around. Hopefully there is one.... I spent the day walking the whole city (at least that's what it felt like!). Most everything was closed...on a Friday....so maybe it was a holiday or custom or something. But I found a small beach on the ocean where I layed out and relaxed for a couple of hours. I was so excited to worship the sun...because it's been weeks since I've seen really good weather! Then I caught my ferry to Patras, Athens. It was a 15 hour ride and I paid an extra 40 euros for a bed in a female room (3 other beds). Turned out, no one else was in the room...so I had the whole place to myself! It was worth it to me to be able to get good sleep and have two hot showers, and a place to keep my stuff! The ferry was like a huge cruise ship with various bars, restaurants, lounging areas, a kid's corner, casino, etc. It was a fun, and interesting ride....
