The oldest statue on the Charles Bridge is St. John of Nepomuk. John of Nepomuk was a priest in Prague under King Wenceslas IV. The Queen made a confession to John of Nepomuk. The King being a very suspicious man, pressed John of Nepomuk for the Queen’s confessions which John of Nepomuk would not reveal, not even to the King, because it would be against his commitment of confidentiality. The King ordered Nepomuk be executed and was thrown into the Vltava River from the bridge and drowned. The reliefs at the bottom show the Queens confession (left) and Nepomuk being thrown from the bridge (right) Legend says that touching the right brings good luck and you may return to Prague someday. Touching the left brings bad luck which makes sense since the confession led to Nepomuks death, however both sides are polished from all the touching.
