The brick barracks stood in the oldest part of the camp. Each of them had a designed capacity of over 700 prisoners per block but often there were up to a thousand. At first, the buildings had earthen floors. Over time, these were covered with a layer of bricks or a thin layer of concrete. At first, the barracks were unheated in the winter but eventually iron stoves were installed.
