The Berlin Victory Column built on a base of polished red granite. The relocation of the monument probably saved it from destruction in World War II. Its old site in front of the Reichstag was destroyed by American air raids in 1945, then the French wanted to dynamite the monument after the war but the British and Americans wouldn't allow it.
