Saint Denis is a Christian martyr. In the third century, he was Bishop of Paris. He was martyred by beheading on the highest hill in Paris (now Montmartre), in connection with the persecution of Christians. After his head was chopped off, Denis is said to have picked it up and walked ten kilometres, preaching a sermon the entire way.
