We rolled out of bed at 5 and were in the minibus at 6 heading towards Tully. We were feeling pretty hungover so slept most of the way. When i opened my eyes we were surrounded my lush green hillsides, it was beatifull. The rain was on its was but i didnt care. We stopped off at the raft hut to load up on coffee and then started the drive up to the top of the river, the views were amazing.
I was wide awake now and ready to rock and roll, we put on our gear and got into groups and were given our instructors. We were lucky enough to land one of the best around, "Number 1" as he's known :) Tuan also Kayaks and managed to land himself a kayak from one of his mates so he was gonna go down the river next to us and get some good ppics of us newbies getting thrown around in the raft.
We set off and darren our instructor taught us basic manouvers and gave us commands that we would have to follow when he shouted them, such things "right, left, down" meaning everyone get the the left or right side or get your asses downin the raft were about to go of a drop or hit something!
It was absolutely awesome, i sat at the front and loved every minute, once you realsie to just let the raft do the work you become really comfortable and figure out that you have just as much chance of falling int he raft as you do of falling out. We were lucky enough to get a good group and everyone was committed to working hard. We were hitting all the obsticals and not flipping the raft unlike the other groups which was a good laugh to see.
Half way down we came to waterfall and decided to paddle underneath it which was fun. We then pulled up on the bank opposite and had a BBQ cooked up for us!! Awesomness!
Back on the water after lunch and the rain arrived, it actually made it even better, it made us feel like we were really getting involved and working hard. It didnt bother us because we were soaked anyway and the water was warm!
Darren had loads of knowledge about the area and in the quite spots gave us talks, it was real good to hear about the river and all the wild life around it. A bit further on and we were coming to the big drop, we could either go off it normally or choose to catapolt ourselves.....We hadnt fallen out all day and thought why not so Darren made us all sit on the back of the raft and we headed off the edge! As soon as the back came off the raft fliped backwards and we all took a swim :) We then came to Jabba rock (the rock looks like jabba from star wars) where we could jump off, i'd been waiting for a decent jump rock and this was a high one, i climbed up and did my now trademark front flip off the top executed to perfection even in my life jacket ;)
Next were some pretty powerfull rapids which we cleard easy peezy now as we were pros ;) but Darren said he could flip us if we wanted by paddeling up into the rapid and put all the weight on one side which we did again! Great fun except Carrie got stuck under the raft whcih freaked her out a bit but she loved it really and was soon back on the raft working hard.
It was a great day, action packed the whole day.
