Hello Everyone,
Last time we wrote we were just about to get on an overnight train to Hue. The journey was fine, though the train was pretty dirty. We slept well and were lucky enough to see a beautful sunrise and lots of scenery from the train before we arrived. Hue was a welcome break from the madness of Ha Noi. It was very quiet, partly because it was Tet, and all the Vietnamese spend the holiday with family, a bit like Christmas. Because of this we felt brave enough to hire bikes and chance it on the roads. It was very liberating to have our own transport for a change. We cycled round the old, walled citadel which was lovely. Lots of little lanes lined with small houses and several areas of water with bridges over them. There didn't seem to be any other tourists around in that area, just a few, occaisionally growly, dogs. There was another walled citadel within this one which had loads of old chinese temples to visit. We also took a boat trip up the river to another walled temple site where the toomb of Tu Duc is. This was a lovely area of old chinese buildings and toombs, lots of shady trees and little paths to follow. Unfortunately we didn't have much time there.
We then caught a bus to Hoi An, just a few hours away. It's a very picturesque town which was spared bombing in the war so is full of old chinese style architecture. It's aslo full of tailors and is the place to get clothes made, so, of course, we did and spent too much time going in and out of shops for various fittings and refittings. The best thing we did in Hoi An was a cooking class at the Red Bridge Cooking School. That involved a trip to the market to have various fruit and veg explaned, then a boat trip to the school. There we were given a tour of the herb garden and then a chef did a demonstration which we the had to copy ourselves at our own little cookers. We made delicious fresh spring rolls which we ate there and then and later had a big lunch of the rest of what we made. Yummers!
The next leg was a gruelling 20 hour coach journey to where we are now - Mui Ne. It is a little haven of peace and quiet on a very long and sandy beach. Just what we need. It's very hot with not a cloud in the sky, but made bearable by a lovely breeze and the warm waters of the South China Sea. Soon we are off to see the sun set over some sand dunes. We hired a motorbike to ride ourselves, but there's no where to practice and i don't trust myself on the roads yet so we'll go as passengers for now.
Hope you are all well and enjoy the mamouth photo album.
Lots of love from Emma and Lucynda xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
