ROYAL PALACE GARDENS
Favourite place for teenagers in late afternoon. Next to building now designated as the "Royal Theatre", where there are traditional Lao dance performances. The mystery though: who was the not-so-young gentleman who made speeches before the show in both English and French (a language noone speaks in Laos any more)? Traditional dance was revived by those who remembered it long after the communist Pathet Lao takeover in 1975. Santi Inthavong (of Villa Santi), who married the grand-daughter of the last king, was apparently the person who instigated this revival, as well as having been one of those instrumental in having Luang Prabang granted the status of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
