Spent most of the day visiting villages along the Mekong River. Started at a factory producing bricks and floor tiles. The firm has been in the family for seven generations. After the Vietnam War the land was confiscated by the Communists, but it was returned to the family in 1992 and they built new kilns. We then visited a big village market that serves the region. Every type of vegetables, fruits, meat, fish and seafood was sold, all fresh. Ended the day with a visit to a village that is almost all Catholic. Vietnam now has a fair degree of freedom, including freedom of religion. Kids in the village were very friendly and wanted to practice their English. This was Sunday, so they were all dressed in their Sunday best. Still a one-party state but the locals are allowed to elect the local members of the national parliament. The candidates are all members of the Communist Party, but the people are allowed to choose from among several local candidates.
