Happy Chinese New Year!! It's the year of the monkey!!
We decide that whilst we are in an Asia country slap bang in the middle of Chinese New Year that it would be rude if we didn't go and see any of the festivities!
First stop was Chinatown for the midnight celebrations on the 7th February. The streets were full of laterns and even more full of people! The streets were rammed!!
We didn't know where the fireworks were going to take place so we settle on a spot and it's completely in the wrong place! the fireworks set off at 12 and we are stood behind a shopping complex and cannot see a thing...great!
News on the street is that there are more fireworks to be set off down on The Float, Marina Bay. It's about an hours walk from our hostel so we set off about 4pm to arrive in plently of time for the fireworks.
The walk is lovely, the skyscrapers are incredible and the Marina Bay Sands building is AMAZING! Stuart loves it. We get to The Float were there are huge statues of monkeys and other chinese new year things and it looks amazing! There is a stage on 'The Float' and behind that 33,000 seats (like a football stadium). Perfect to watch the fireworks being set off.
It's tea time so we head to Food Street where it is full of local and other cultures street foods. Indonesian, Singapore, English, European, Indian.... we decide on an Indian! So we order two Chicken Biryani's for $5 and later we go back for two Tandoori Burgers (which had a fried egg on and I ate it!!!!!)
There is a huge statue that every hour showers the people with 'good fortune' which is just gold pieces of paper with numbers written on them. I get involved and end up with a number 3 and a number 1 - don't know what that means?!
The fireworks start at 9pm and they are something else! Really over the top and they also have a laser and light show to accompany the fireworks.
3 minutes later and it's all over... the thousands of people start leaving. We are stood for what feels like forever trying to leave!!
