Boyng! Boyng! Boyng! G'day everyone, hows it going? As you can see we've made it to Oz! James is picking up the lingo pretty quick too, calling everyone Bruce and Sheila!
Sorry it's been a while but we've been working hard on our tans this past week, tough life huh! Quick update: Left Kuala Lumpur and headed down West Coast of Malaysia on a bus to Malacca, stopped there for a night then carried on to Johor Bahru, just on the edge of Malaysia before the causeway to Singapore. Not a lot to do other than shopping, great normally but not when you're backpacking unfortunately! The resorts of Langkawi and Penang look fantastic for a luxurious holiday but the smaller towns are pretty dull, but we were there out of season so that didn't help. Had nice time though, hundred times better than you know where!
Had two nights in Singapore, place was absolutely chocker so had to splash a bit more cash than planned on accommodation! Mind you, being the cleanest city in the world, everywhere was of a high standard. Relaxed by pool and met some English people on stopover to New Zealand, nice to catch up on some home gossip! James was pleased cos he was a West Ham fan so plenty of banter there!
Early flight to Perth, got some great pictures from the plane as we flew over Sharks Bay on the West Coast, this is what we've been waiting for! Think we're gonna like it here! Never realised how big the West Coast was - 2.5hrs flight from the first sight of Ozzie land! Landed in Perth airport and met two old volunteers to help us sort out somewhere to stay, not realising that we landed just before the Ashes kicked off in the Waca! You'll never believe it but even Loz has been watching the cricket, they're mad for it out here, but then they are the best at it! Finally found a Backpackers in Freo (Freemantle), 20km south of Perth, with two beds left in an 8-bed dorm (this will be interesting with Jims nightly activity - for people who don't know this includes singing, talking, wandering and eating all in his sleep!). Arrived at the Sundancers Backpackers and checked in, it was like walking into the Grapevine in South Oxhey! Drugs, drunks, nightmare! Stuck it out for the night but left first thing next morning, not having that!
Drove down to Busselton, 300km south of Perth and been here ever since! Really nice place, beautiful beaches and plenty to do. Stayed in a beachside chalet for a week, the beach is just like Summer Bay (Home & Away!) and we had it to ourselves most of the time, only because everyone else is keeping out of the sun, not us nutters! Got our own little kitchen and best of all they have outdoor BBQs for people to use so James is in his element - meat and jacket every night with not a bit of green in sight! Typical dinner: sausage, steak, chicken, lamb, and a bit of pork if really hungry, washed down with some local wine or a stubbie! Moved into Motel today, staying there til 5th Jan so at least we're sorted for Christmas and New Year! Mind you, doesn't feel like Christmas, clear blue skies, scorching sun, they're christmas adverts on TV are all for BBQs and swimming pools, weird! They even seem to have they're own Christmas songs, well funny, one even sounded like Santa comes from Senegal, imagaine having a black santa - he'd nick all the toys! So Jim is planning to quiz some local kids to find out what they think Christmas is all about! Lets hope he doesn't upset them!
Feeling very at home here in Bussy! Been out and about while we had the car, Yallingrup caves, Surfers point, vineyards in Margaret River (including Vasse Felix where James brother worked, see why he loved it! Bought a couple of bottles to go with the barbie!), there's hundreds of kilometres of gorgeous beaches and surf, haven't had a go yet but its on our to do list!
If we're not in touch before, hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, make sure you have a drink on us in the Rouge (Red Lion), sure most of you will be gathering there for a sherry or two at lunchtime on Christmas Day!
Great to hear from you, keep sending those messages cos it's good to know whats going on, even if it doesn't seem that interesting to you! Be putting some more pictures on soon, just to make you really jealous!
Loads of love, Lauren and James. xxxxxxxxx
