We have just arrived in Kyoto, where we are staying for four nights, before heading off to Tokyo. Since our last blog we've done quite a lot. We flew into Osaka and spent one night there, sleeping on traditional beds, which were suprisingly comfortable. Then we went to Kobe. We didn't see that much of Kobe itself, but we did use it as a base to see Himeji, which has an amazing castle and samurai quaters!! After Kobe, we stayed in Hiroshima, which is beautiful. The A-Bomb dome and peace park are hard to explain, it's a reminder of such devastation in a beautiful setting. A woman who is training to be a guide gave us a free talk about the dome, the epicentre and the city in general before and after the A-bomb. Her grandfather was killed in the bombing, the rest of the family surviving because they had already been evacuated to the countryside. It was amazing to hear about it from someone who has such a personal connection to it. We found Hiroshima very welcoming, everyone was kind and helpful and there was a wonderfully calm atmosphere. During our stay in Hiroshima we took a day trip to Miyashima Island, where we had a slightly more exciting time than anticipated. We had planned to have a nice relaxing day wandering around the island, but unfortunately ended up hiking up a mountain with the bikes we had hired- woops! We're survived though and still managed to have fun.
