Excursion day to the islands, not to sure what we expected really.........
We are duly picked up and transferred to Ao Nang beach, Krabi to board our speedboat. Upon arrival there are hundreds of people lined up and stickered ( this appears to be the main form of communication, you get slapped with a coloured sticker and just follow your colour!) awaiting embarkment. Eventually we board the boat and take a seat, we have a tour guide called Mr Joe King (ha ha). as it turns out he was Mr Joe King it was a joke that he was a tour guide, all he done was shout a destination and ask you to love him! Anyhow onto the islands, unfortunately it was a beautiful day but with a mist in the air that Mr King attributed to Indonesia, so we could not see the islands far away and only when we were upon them could we see their beauty.........Well don't want to sound too down beat already but.......even when we were upon them and we are sure that they are beautiful but it was spoiled immensely but the hundreds of boats moored up on the beach and the 1000s and 1000s of people 10 deep on the sands ( we understand it was the Chinese holiday season!) The first island we disembarked on was Bamboo Island after passing chicken island (rocks resemble chicken apparently) and others, with 45 minutes to explore. We then hopped aboard and headed towards Monkey Bay for some snorkelling (not that we did I (Sarah) can't swim and Louise didn't really fancy it......the mayhem of fellow passengers not conducive to a leisurely swim, so we chilled on deck). We Then headed to another bay, more snorkelling and then landed on Maya Beach the beach from 'the beach' (bucket list tick! Who would of imagined back then watching Leonardo?) Time to explore, we went inland off the beaten track and away from the masses...... Finally we started the return leg where having cruised around small Phi Phi island we headed toward Phi Phi Dom, the largest island for lunch. Again just people, mayhem, and buffet lunch. We found a quiet clean spot on the beach, this island has been devastated by the tsunami and it still is in quite a sorry state. Finally we return home with a headache. We are sure a different day, different boat things may have been different but overall....disappointed......and we we didn't really expect that!
