Hola Amigos!
The night bus was a bit scary. As we got on we were all videoed - but noone explained why. I guess it was incase of theft, as I have met quite a few people who have tole me stories about people getting stuff stolen whilst they were asleep on night buses. Anyway I attached all my valuables to me, so there was no problem. I was just really tired when we arrived in Arequipa as the journey took about 10 hours!
So when we got to the hotel I had a nice shower then a nap. By the time I got up there wasn't much time left to explore, but I went around the main town and looked around some markets (at which I bought a lovely embroidered handbag to add to the collection already posted home).
Yesterday we got up early to go to the Colca Canyon (not the Cola Canyon as I previously thought). To get to the canyon you have to pass over hills about 4800m above sea level.......which is a dizzy hight literally. Although Arequipa is reasonably high, I wasn't expecting the reaction to the altitude on that pass. I really felt light headed and walking was an effort. The canyon itself is about 3600m above sea level, so I still felt the affects there.
We had some Coca tea to help with the affects, then moved on to the village where we were to have a yummy lunch. Yesterday afternoon we then walked up a big hill to see some tombs (again hard work). But after the walk we went to some themal baths to relax which was nice. Last night we had dinner and watched some traditional dancing.
Today we got up really early (5.30) to travel along a really bumpy road (but not as bad as the road near Kampot in Cambodia) to see some Condors flying about. It was nice to see them, although difficult to get a good pic of them.
Now I am back in Arequipa. Tommorrow we fly to Cusco, then start the Inca Trail on Sunday. I am hoping that the trip to the Colca Canyon will help aclimatise me to the altitude in Cusco!
Thats all for now.
