Men were chained up inside the brick cells. There was no door on the cell, so the prison inmates could all see each other, but they were not allowed to talk to each other at all. In fact they were not allowed to move or go to the toilet without permission from the guard. The toilet was an ammunition box inside each cell which was only allowed to be emptied something like once a month!
