Today was the day I said my last goodbyes to my little flat in London and carried my bag down 4 flights of stairs for the very last time. It was a sad moment but the prospect ahead, two months in America was very exciting so it was with a smile on my face that I rolled my case through the streets of Streatham one last time, flagging down the and travelling two journeys on the big red double deckers, again for the last time.
A short flight, followed by a much longer one and finally I here the words I have been waiting to hear the whole time, please be seated as we begin our approach into San Francisco airport. Seeing Sheralee at the aiport it was as if only a day had passed since we last saw each other, and not two years. The air show was in town so our trip from the airport was delayed as we tried to move through grid locked traffic, our taxi driver trying his best to get us there quickly. We checked out our room and then it was time for me to have the best shower I have had in two years...bless the Californian water system. Dinner at Mel's Diner and it was well and truely time for a good sleep.
A walk through the streets that straddled the SanFrancisco Bay was a great way to start the day, the house's were large, the water blue and everyone had a smile on their face because the sun was out. With energy still in the tank we walked the bay from Fort Mason to Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf, this street was a bit too commercial now for my liking. Back to the hotel for dinner and some warmer clothes then we started navigating the local buses with friendly (yes really) locals to get us to our Alcatraz Ferry, where we enjoyed looking back at the city lights as we cruised through the bay and where we explored the world of crime, death and destruction that is Alcatraz.
We were all ready to get out and spend another day walking the streets of San Francisco, but the biggest storm that year was passing through the town, within 2 minutes even locals were wet to the bone, so instead we brak out the travel days and enjoy a hotel day, snuggled up in blankets and sipping hot drinks.
Early start today after losing a day yesterday to the cold wet conditions. We jump on a bus to head towards the financial district, then on to Union street, China Town and through Golden Gate Park where we hop off for a 30min stroll across the very windy and famous Golden Gate Bridge, where suicide signs remind us every 10metres that our life is worth living. We head back into town to view the crooked Lombard St and hang off cable cars like locals. We take a breathe for lunch and then head back to Golden Gate Park to walk around and enjoy the scenery and entertainment. The bridge is now hidden by fog so we decide to catch the open top bus one more time and head straight over the bridge where we are quickly lost and wind blown in a thick foggy haze.
Goodbye San Francisco we will miss you x
