We left Ko Samui early Wednesday morning and unfortunately there was no-one about so we had to leave without paying! We took the 9.00am car ferry over to Surat Thani, enjoying coffee and biscuits for breakfast on the crossing. The coach took us to Krabi where another boat made the final trip to Ko Phi Phi at 3.30pm. We arrived on the island and after initially struggling, we managed to secure some good value accommodation (for Phi Phi!). We spent the evening exploring the town and booked our bus to Penang and the trips we wanted to do on the island, then enjoyed a Phad Thai tea.
Thursday morning we were up bright and early for our first scuba diving experience! We headed out with Princess Divers at 8.00am, a great bunch of fun loving instructors and fellow divers. After a short briefing with Joe,our instructor, we headed into shallow waters to practice some skills before our first 10 meter dive. We saw some amazing coral and tropical fish. After an hour we resurfaced, boarded the boat and filled up on pineapple, coffee and chicken and cashew nuts. We had some time to chill on the boat and Sarah took the plunge (twice) and jumped off the top of the boat into the sea, with photographic and video evidence! After a choppy stop at our next destination (causing Sarah to see her food in reverse!) we headed into the waters for our second and final dive. Obviously now pros we didn't need to re-do our 'skills' and had more time to enjoy the depths! We even managed to see gorgeous sea turtles, getting metres away from them! Around 1.30pm we returned to dry land and watched the DVD of our trip.
At 3.00pm it was time for our second adventure of the day - camping on Ko Phi Phi Leh at Maya Bay - the setting of 'The Beach'! En route we stopped for a spot of snorkeling our the reefs, seeing yet more beautiful fish before climbing back on board for fruit snacks and headed round to the bay. The Beach was like paradise and as soon as the day trippers left it was all ours for the night! We set up the tent and explored before a Thai dinner, music, drinking (of course we had a bucket, or 2!) and laughter under the star-filled sky! As the evening progressed we took a number of trips the toilet dodging the many giant crabs (2 were even in the loos fighting over a plastic bag!). Supper of chicken legs came later and we passed out under the stars! This morning many of us woke up with sore heads, but the setting made up for any hangovers and the scrambled egg and coffee breakie soon sorted us all out! Then it was a smooth boat trip back to Ko Phi Phi Don and to our hotel were we caught up on a bit of sleep.
We spent our final afternoon wondering the streets and window shopping and headed up to the Viewpoint for sunset - well worth the 20 minute sweaty climb! In the evening we headed out for a pizza dinner at Madame Resto, grabbed a drink and checked out the bars.
