Arrived in Sydney mid afternoon- by plane rather than bus as originally planned.
Checked out our accomodation just at the bottom of the prime ministers residence in Kirribilli (otherside of harbour bridge to the opera house). Quick change as we were having our first night out on the tiles in Sydney- met up with Claire and Nick from our West Coast trip and one of their mates Tatem. The night ended in the early hours of the morning in Scruffy Murphys (Hang on a sec this is where we both got asked for id- yes charlotte for the first time so she was chuffed!- also at this point can i say that I am not a poser- although i appear in many of the photos this is because charlotte deletes the ones where she doesnt think she looks nice!!!)
Can you believe in the middle of this bar i bumped into Matthew Harper- who i here you ask- a lad i went to school with who i havent seen and spoken to since i was 10 and we both recognised each other- small world.
The day after was spent recovering and planning what we were going to do for new years eve. We headed into town across the harbour bridge and went up the pylon tower and got amazing views of the city. As we were quietly walking round circular quay nursing our hangovers we stopped to watch a street performance- looked quite intriguing guy with bike, chainsaw and fire juggling things. As we were just trying to creep past I got picked to join a group of 4 blokes he had picked to help him. The next 45 minutes!! entailed extreme embarrassment on my behalf as I had to pick the most good looking of the group to protect me. The photos where I am laid on the ground speak for themselves. The major trauma for me was throwing the apple to the guy once he was stood on tall pole with bike on top juggling chainsaw and fire- as Im such a crap thrower!!
New years eve- there is a link on the message board showing some good photos of the fireworks seen as ours didnt come out that great if any one wants to look.
Headed out at 10am to stock up and find our spot at Mrs Macquairies Chair, next to the botanical gardens, which jut out into the harbour. Massive queues to get in we waited for 2 hours before we actually got through the gate and then spent a while searching for a good spot.
Spent most of afternoon playing Uno and watching the drunk scots man singing and entertaining everyone seen as he'd had about 5 bottles of wine straight from the bottle in the time we watched him and that was before 6pm!!
As well as Claire and Nick, Martin (extremely funny Swedish guy from the West Coast trip) also joined us. Having spent enough time watching the Scots guy getting wasted we also started on the wine, just as he was being carted off!!!
There were 2 firework displays the first at 9pm, had a pretty good view and the atmosphere was amazing but no trouble either everyone was just there for a good time.
The day after it rained- we had been really lucky on new years eve as the weather had been lovely all day.
Today was our first touristy sight seeing day in Sydney and we got on the hop on hop off bus- we would of liked to have done more hopping on and off but the buses didnt come that regular! Saw all the sites, the Opera House, Botanical Gardens and Darling Harbour.
That night we met up with Sparkey from work (who had come over for the crap cricket) for a few drink and some food which was nice.
The weather had really picked up again so we headed to the beach. Caught the bus to Bondi and did a beach walk that took us from Bondi Beach round to Coogee beach. That was a really nice day and stopped for lunch along the way. Caught the train back to Kings Cross- which was the area we had originally booked to stay but so glad that we didnt stay there it was quite a dump and seedy place, much better off in the PM's garden!!
Left the city and caught the ferry to Manly- where we checked into a small guesthouse which was run by someone like the guy off the Kumar's. Everywhere was so booked up we had a single room with another mattress shoved on the floor.
Spent the next few days lazing on the beach before heading to the Blue Mountains for the day, where we saw the Three Sisters rocks and Gordon Falls lookout. We also went to the scenic world where we went on the steepest railway in the world - thought it would be a nice little ride until it dropped down 90 degree cliff- only difference between this and a ride was that we werent strapped in and we were sat right at the front!! Then took the cable car back up.
That night we ate the fastest Thai meal ever- who would think that arriving in a restaurant at 9.30 at night would cause such a problem!-- We had eaten a 2 course meal and was out of the door by 10pm!!
