More of Turkey...and it keeps getting better!
Currently sitting in Goreme having quite a relaxed day. Got up at 5.15am for a sunrise balloon ride over the lunar like landscape that is Cappadoccia. Champagne was flowing after the ride. Have just had a bit of a snozze in the sun and plan to go back to doing just that in a moment!
After the canoe incident left Oludinez and headed for Kas...still on the coast mmm....sea. Spent the day swimming and snorkelling and picking splinters out of Ave's foot! There was some Efes(local beer) flowing after that incident! Don't really like feet! Kas is a lovely wee harbour town...touched by tourism but not too much! Had some free raki in Smileys bar and fell asleep(making a habit of that). Our next stop was Olympus though we stayed in the next town...Calici(Ithink). Found a wee pension(turkish accomodation of sorts) that had a yoga class...yipee...felt great after that as it's been about 8 weeks since my last! Walked along the very pebbley beach to Olympus and had a wander round the ruins. Olympus is not at all as I expected...it's basically a dirt road with some shacks made into bars. Had meatballs for lunch and strolled back to camp in time for a dip in the (slightly cool) sea. It'll be the last for quite some time! All 32 of us headed up the hill to chimaera(the eternal flame) for sunset. Apparently this was the inspiration for the olympic flame...the flames are (funnily enough) eternal as the natural gas seeps out from the rocks! It was good to get the ole heart pumping a bit. It was an interesting walk down in the dark with Danny and Ave.
After a very long drive inland I experienced one of the best days yet! The 10km walk along the Ilhara valley was outstanding and I reckon a must do for all! The celts Ave, Martin, Jock and I spent an hour playing in the houses up in the cliffs! There are lots of little passages and rooms to clamber about in and up to! The walk was awesome....oh how I love the great outdoors! I sat atop the truck eating my homemade tuna, egg, cucumber, tomato and mayo on turkish sandwich surrounded by snowy mountains! Will, Ave,Martin and I then played around in the underground city in Derinkuyo. Cook duty came aroung quickly and Rachel, Polly, Des(after a kick up the bum) and I rustled up a fantastic lasgne cooked on the camp fire! Getting used to this catering for 30 odd folk(Ithink)! I also think I've sussed out how to repack the truck...one of my favourite pastimes!!!
Off to a turkish night this evening...it's our 1 month anniversery....could be messy! Got a long drive towards Ankara tomorrow where we hope to sort out our visas for Pakistan. Also have the task of buying a chidor for Iran....the shorts and t-shirts will have to move to the bottom of the rucsac for a few weeks!
