leaving Peshawar and heading into the lush green hills that are the start of the Karakoram `highway was a delightespecially as the temp dropped! We were all happily oblivious to the fact that we travelling through some of the most dangerous areas in Pakistan...due to the proximity of the Afghan border! Bush camped in a nice little roadside spot where the entire population of the area came to wash their trucks...and to watch us....sitting and chatting and cooking and exciting things like that! Karimabaad was a breath of fresh air afer a few days drive up the precarious but beautiful KKH. Surrounded by some of the worlds highest mountains `i was in my element! Spent the afternoon in the Hunza cafe enjoying my first proper coffee for a very long time and the best walnut cake I've ever had! I did my highest ever trek up to Ultar meadow which sits at an amazing 13000ft! Boy was it a hard slog...but so worth it! We picked up a local 'guide'(i use the term loosley as he got us lost on the way)on the way who did help a little....though he spoke no english at all! After apleasant stop at the meadow nestled below ladies finger and Ultar peak Ave,Rach,Will and I began the descent...at which point Rach began vomitting...the truckbug had struck one of my gang...oh no! The walk down was not as enjoyable as the walk up...but with 2 nurses on board Rach got down in 1 piece! A yummy dinner and a boogey with some Punjabi dudes and I was ready for bed! The next day was to be the start of my illness...ho hum it was bound to happen...I spent the day in bed catching up on some sleep!
The return journey down the KKH was just as enjoyable second time round. The scenery was breathtaking and the drive was scarey at times and I loved it...and then someone or something stole my shoe! After my beloved merrells gave up the ghost I was lucky enough to become the new owner of Grants Teva's...until one went missing..so now I live in my beloved green thongs and I can't wait for Kathmandu and a new pair of sandals!
