Jodphur is another of the big fort cities in Rajasthan. Its fort sits on the hilltop overlooking the city, which in keeping with Rajasthan's fondness for colour is painted blue. We spent the afternoon looking round the fort which is to date Gareth's favourite thing (we are lucky that India has lots of military history to keep him amused although I'm not sure we can sustain it for the rest of the trip). I did rather stupidly choose this to be the day I washed my bandage so swiftly discovered that without it my ankle can still get pretty swollen pretty quickly. Luckily the next day was going to be a rest day... albeit a rest day enforced on us by the timing of the Hindu festival of Holi.
This is known as the festival of colour with good reason as the whole of India takes to the streets and throws colourful powder and paint bombs at each other. From the rooftop of our hotel in the old city we had an excellent view of the madness beneath. We did of course also venture down to the market square and managed to remain relatively unscathed (this it would seem is another thing on the list of why you should always bring a crutch on holiday). After the festival had calmed and people had gone in for a bhang induced afternoon nap the town looked unrecognisable...the blue city was now a dusky pink and looked like there had been a Care Bear massacre.
It was nice to have a day of rest and Dada cooked us a lovely Dosa for breakfast then a mutton curry for tea. The next day we headed through the pink stained desert to Jaisalmer...
