We have arrived in Chiang Mai which is in the north of Thailand and is considered to be it's second city although it's nothing like Bangkok. We took the overnight train from Ayutthaya on wednesday (16th) and it was ok. We travelled in a second class air conditioned car and it was quite nice. The only different between 2nd and 1st class is that in first class your berths are in little cabins whereas in 2nd they are just curtained off. Rachel and I both had top berths and I wasn't expecting much room but I could fully stretch out in one. I didn't sleep very well but got enough and it was an excellent way to cover the distance without wasting a day and it saved us a nights accomodation. The best part was that it only cost us 24 quid between us.
Our last two days in Ayutthaya were great. We met up with the canadian couple we got talking to and they suggested that we share a tuk tuk out to this temple outside of town because it was supposed to be an excellent place to get some photographs at sunset. The pictures we took are amazing and I have finally worked out how to post photographs so I will be doing this later on this afternoon. We went for a meal with them later on in the evening and while we were chatting one of the staff came running out to the pavement seating area and started beating this tree with a cane. There on the tree was this little green snake, not sure is it was poisonous but luckily we weren't given any opportunity to find out as the guy beat it to death. I thought this was a little brutal as no-one else had noticed the snake other than him and afterwards everyone kept looking over their shoulders at the tree!
The next day we visited the museums in town and just chilled out. We went for a Thai massage in the afternoon and I never realised how strong little Thai women could be. My joints have never clicked so much but it was really good, relaxing but still made you tired.
We haven't done a lot in Chiang mai yet. We visited the night bazaar last night and had a walk around the city. We played some pool and got talking to this Irish bloke who recommended places we should visit, one of which we shall be visiting today.
Our guesthouse is nice. Its clean and very quiet but its right next door to a massive guesthouse that is aimed at Israelis and all I will say is their a fun loving bunch! Room is costing us 300baht a night with an ensuite (with hot water which in Thailand is rare!) and that works out as 4.80 per night.
Hope everyone is ok and that the weather is not too bad! Chiang Mai is much cooler than where we've been so far, only 26 -29 degrees everyday now!!
