Liz and Kathryns adventure
Sorry its been so long since our last update. Weve been extremely busy! me and Kat are both updating at the mo. im doin the Cairnes bit and shes doin Whitsundays.. so sorry if any of it laps over!
So we arrived in Caines (from darwin) and it was raining. Which was nice (it was actually a novelty to be cool for a change!) and we checked in to our local YHA... for some reasons we allways seem to get old grannies in our dorms that are out of their trees and snore alot! ah well i supposed thats one of the character building things about traveling!
Kathryn Started her scuba diving course. So i decided to book a day diving. I was a bit apprehensive when i got there because i wondered whether i would remember how to scuba dive... so i told them i was a bit nervous. They reasured me by puting me with a japanse guy that didnt speak a word of english!... greeaaat! lol so next thing i know im swiming around with the fishies! and luckly it all came back to me.
The visability wasnt great because of the cyclone recently. But , hey, its still the great barrier reef so im not complaining!
I found out i could go on the same boat as kathryn for the liveaboard. So i booked it (3 days).
Meanwhile kathryn is off doing her pool training ready to blow bubbles in the big blue. I dont think she was initially a great fan of the underwater life.... something about your life depending on a silly plastic thing in your mouth! i suppose it it quite an unnatural thing to do!
2 days later we board the boat to spend the next 3 days of our lives at sea. It was kathryns first time on a power boat, and it wasnt the calmest of days. So she spend the majority of the trip to the reef chucking up in to several brown paper bags .. along with 99% of the japs on board... One thing iv learnt on this trip is asian people 1. cant handle their alcohol 2. can sleep anywhere 3. throw up on boats! They crack me up!
anyway i ended up doin dives unguided, which i now realise is much better because u can go anywhere and at your own pace, thats if you've got a good buddy. I had several bad buddys on this trip. One that run out of air twice as quick as me. One that are complete sleze bag who thought he was gods gift in the dive comunity, and wore extremely tight spedos/banana hammock/budgie smuggler (oz)/b******sniper (from holland!).. anyway u get the picture! egh! anyways i didnt let them ruin my dive adventure.
I SWAM WITH SHARKS! on a night dive! they put flood lights on the back of the boat which attract little fish.. which attract the bigger fish which attract the sharks! So i hung on the line under water watchin the sharks eat their dinner (thankfully not us!) it was bloody scary! everyone was laughing at me coz they could hear me half laughing half screaming through my reg! at one point this massive baracuda came swimming towards my light, mouth open.. no messing around.. scary as!
Meanwhile ... Kathryn is venturing into the reef practicing her skills for openwater. Full mask removal, taking your kit off underwater and all that jazz. She came out after every dive and said "im never doing that again.. i hate scuba diving" but she wasnt going to be defeated.
So she saw it through and got her qualification! yey! then we went for a dive together which was cool.
Been there, done that, got the underwater photo evidence!
I think kathryn enjoyed it more when she didnt have to do all the skills, and we did another 2 dive in the whitsundays.. i think shes secretly coming round to liking it!
I would love to put photos up but the gods of "keeping my valuble possesions safe" are not fond of me. My camera was in the bottoom of my bag and my bag was in the bottom of the dingy and it was the only thing that got soaking wet!.. im gutted!
anyho il shut up now coz youve all still got our adventure on the whitsundays to read! bye xxx
