Shanghai
18th October.
We got off the shuttle bus and realised I had lost our directions and address of our hostel. We managed to remember our station and got there ( very hard with many stairs and heavvvvy backpacks) We then started wandering the streets asking for a Hostel that we did not know the name of! Luckily we asked some young ( looked trendy ) lads who stuck by us and helped us. The even carried our bags. I had the ump as usual and Alex was being poilte but after one of the lads kept saying computer i cracked a smile and was thankful they were looking after us! Any way we paid a random shop owner and got an address.! The boys helped us get a taxi and stayed with us...bless them we wanted to take them home with us for looking after us so well! Moral of the story..have more than one copy of where you are staying!!!! Any way we we arrived at the Hostel Bob was playing they had huge sofas and TVs and we had a clean room , shower and a Toilet! Its amazing what gets us excited these days! We went to bar street for a quick drink but the nightlife is just a bit weird! We were the only westerners and had about 6 waitresses constantly around us! We loved our Hostel but as we left a cockroach ran under Alex's feet! We didn't even care we were clean!
Shanghai....
We got bored and lazy of 'day to day', so summary from now on!
Shanghai is a huge City and we got to see most of the main sights there. First day we went to the Shanghai Tower . The veiw was amazing. I would not say beautiful but definatley breathtakng. I have never seen so many high rise towers in such a big space. Alex was pretty scared but still did it ( although didnt stay long near the edge.) We walked along the Bund which is like the embankment but in China! ( not as good ) I could not help compare Shanghai's version of Europe and compare it with the real thing. We needed to cross the river so went through a "' sight seeing tunnel "'. It was the biggest joke ever...sparkly lights and bright decorations and nothing to do with Shangahi.
Our favourite thing in Shangahi was not the massive shopping mails or brilliant modern Architecture but their old quarter. It was full of Chinese culture , markets and buildings. We went to some really beatuful gardens and was amazed by how peaceful it was in the maddness of the city.
We got a sleeper train to nanning ( 30 hours ) which was actually ok. I was not impressed with the three story high bunk beds with no doors and was pleased when we thought we had our own cabin. We got very excited, made our self at home ( taking up all four beds ) then got woke up at 1 am by a couple coming to share our cabin! ! I think the man felt sorry for us as we looked starved and the train people would not serve us food as they could not understand us. So he gave us 2 rank chocclate bars and some hard rice thing! We thanked him but secretly chucked them!
We then got another 6 hour bus to the boarder. It was quite funny as they were so strict on the Chinese side and even told us to step back in single file as we were standing with our toe over the line next to eachother! It was pretty intimadating but there were a few other wetsreners so we had a giggle. So after showing our passport about 20times we got to the Vietamese side which was a free for all who can get to the counter first! We made it to Vietnam.
