We got a bus from the airport into the city centre which was crammed with kids on a school trip, and holiday makers. As we went around a corner, Lindsay's magnetic personality attracted a suitcase from the top rack and it fell onto her head. Luckily there was no damage to the suitcase…or Lindsay's armour plated head. Time to find some cultural stuff in this place, so we took a trip to the capital and saw lots of buildings including the white house. There was also a helicopter flying around which we suspect had Georgie in. Ian said that it was an important helicopter anyway - he could tell that the pilot was called Bob and was probably a friend of his - either that or he definitely had 2 eyes. But seriously, after having the Metro ticket machine swallow our money and not give us a ticket, and after realising that a Washington metro tickets is called a 'Farecard' (pointless name change to confuse non-locals) we got to our accommodation and went on a sight seeing, ex-London double decker red bus. We saw Capital Hill where the Senators work, the long centre strip of grassland that leads to the Washington Memorial (needle), the Lincoln Memorial (that was cool and really big just like in Hollywood films), and various war memorials and other memorials. As it was getting hot, we had a little sleep in the park (very brave of us although the park was busy and safe) and waddled off to the White House. Apparently they 'didn't know who we were' so we had to slum it with the commoners and look through the railing to the White House just like you see on TV. The second and final day, after a waffle breakfast in a locals café, we went around the Air and Space Musuem, where Ian explained the finer points of fluid dynamics in supersonic flight and Lindsay kept her eyes out for space food (none seen for sale). We made our way to Union Station, which was crammed full of shops and food courts and boarded our train for a 5 hour journey to Raleigh / Durham to see Ian's brother. Unfortunately, due to a combination of track maintenance and hitting an earlier train hitting a car on a railroad crossing, we had 2 hours of delays. Still - we got free drinks!
