We left Avignon early, and started our long day of travel ... Avignon > Lyon > Geneva > Milan > Venice. Such is life with Eurorail. Luckily, we hadn't slept much the night before so we took the long train journey as an opportunity to catch up on missed sleep. I was surprised that in Geneva we walked right by customs officials and they didn't ask for our passports! I was pretty disappointed, because let's be honest, collecting passport stamps is one of the perks of travel.
Anyways, we got to Venice late at night and managed to successfully navigate the valporetto to our stop. However, once at the stop we could not find our hotel! We had heard Venice is a maze of streets, and even with our maps, we were hopelessly lost. Being stubborn, Gordon refused to ask for directions until I saw two policemen and asked them for help. Ironically, they also got lost helping us find our hotel! Finally, we managed to find it and stumble into bed.
On our first real day in Venice we walked to Piazza San Marco and found it to be a mob scene. It must have been spring break or something because there were a gazillion school groups. We decided to skip the lines and just wander around and quickly realized that every time we turned a corner there was a beautiful view. Seriously, Venice is stunning and even pictures don't do it justice. After literally walking around the entire city (both on purpose, and getting lost a ton) we took a short nap in the hotel before heading out again. Surprised by the ridiculously cheap prices, Gordon bought a button-down at one of the open-air markets for 5 Euros, and a couple ties. That night, we had one of our favorite dishes from the trip ... gnocchi in gorgonzola sauce. Heaven.
Day two we caught the valporetto over to check out Murano. The glass blowing demonstration was okay, but it was fun to wander the stores looking at all the beautiful glass. Grabbing lunch, we had our new favorite Italian dish - prosciutto wrapped cantelope. Have I mentioned I love Italian food? After Murano, we came back to Venice and took a gondola ride. It's so touristy, but so priceless. We got a great gondolier that explained the history of Venice as we went, and what we were seeing. Gordon was wearing his new button-down and pink tie on our trip, and some Chinese (girl) tourists took his picture! So funny.
