Lin & Phil - Out and About in the Big World...
So just before we landed in Christchurch we stumbled across a rent a car advert in the plane magazine and thought, why not. 2 hours later we were in our little brand new Daihatsu Sirion (we named her Daisy). What an absolute bargain too - only 17 pounds a day including full insurance!
We went straight to Kaikoura to look at the Seals and the spectacular mountain ranges. The following day we heard from the locals that they were expecting a storm so we took off pretty early and headed towards Hamner Springs, where there are natural hot water springs. So whilst it was snowing we were boiling ourselves sitting in the hot springs (at 41 degrees celsius!).
Next we did a massive journey cross country through the northern parts of the southern alps and enjoyed the spectacular mountain ranges all covered with deep snow. Luckily we didnt have to use the chains on the tires as it had been ploughed just before we got there.
The next day we decided to climb Franz Joseph glacier which was really cool. We put on our crampons (ice studs that strap onto your boots)and went up. It was pretty dangerous too - we couldnt believe there were so few safety ropes and such big drops. We absolutely loved it.
Today we have just arrived in Christchurch after an incredible cross country drive through Arthurs pass - aroad which goes right through and over the Alps - incredibly scarry but very beautiful and very snowy!
So we drove Daisy over 1200km's in 3 1/2 days! and spent about 37 pounds on fuel! beat that Dad!
Flying to Wellington tomorrow so gotta get an early night!
