Kitzbühel, a ski resort village for the über wealthy, and fabulous riding -including a picturesque 10km climb over Pass Thurn - for us mere cycle tourists. The place is gorgeous, soaring mountains, lederhosen everywhere, cobbled streets and a Louis Vuitton store, because you never know when you might need a designer handbag after a hard day hiking, mountain biking or skiing. Halfway up the climb I'm overtaken by two sinewy guys on roadbikes. A support car follows them and few minutes later a couple more flew past as I lift my pace from 10km/hr to a blistering 12km/hr. At this speed I barely have time to take in the breathtaking view or the far more sensible option of the cable car, which runs alongside. As I near the top a big Pass Thurn sign is overshadowed by two shirtless young males at a drink station waving at me and holding out a water bottle. Wunderbar! They are there for the roadbikers flying past on the Peak Break ride (www.peakbreak.com) a 900km 10-day race through Austria, climbing 10,000 metres in total. Wobbly Wheels and I are the only ones taking advantage of the pitstop, happily accepting handfuls of gels, bananas and drinks. And we're only riding 40km today but who cares. We fly down the otherside (14km whoopee) and I forget I'm on a touring bike with saddle bags and try drafting off a group of four as they fly past at more than 40km/hr, yeeha! I remember where I am and what I'm doing (as the group disappears into the distance, who am I kidding?) and slow it down to a meander. This is a honeymoon, not a race, besides look at all that fabulous alpine countryside those Lycra-clad speed-freaks are missing out on. Don't get to see that every day.
