I'm sitting at Heathrow Terminal 4 with that mix of excitement and anxiety that I get as I wait for my gate to be announced. I'm absolutely thrilled to be flying out to Ghana today to be working on the ATE Special Needs Awareness Programme (SNAP).
Over the coming weeks I will be working with Habib, our Lawra-based Operations Manager and a number of bright and engaged consultants on the evaluation of this project. Its really going to be a lot of information gathering about the disabled children and their families that we support; finding out more about their needs, the impact that the SNAP Programme is having, and how we can reach more people more effectively.
The SNAP programme aims to change the lives of disabled children and their families in Lawra. Through providing basic healthcare and education, giving regular support and advocacy for inclusion, we aim to reduce stigma, increase access to services and enable disabled children to be accepted, loved and enabled to contribute within their community.
Its going to be a packed run of work over the next few weeks from developing and delivering surveys, carrying out some home visits and holding a community durbar (community meeting) on disability in a rural village where we have begun school feeding and supporting small local business owners.
But before I get ahead of myself there is longhaul flight, a night in Accra and a 14 hour coach trip to reach Lawra.
